Music Group Classes

Well-designed music group classes for children age from 3 to 6. This is a music training class for children to learn about musical concepts and essential aural skills through a series of engaging musical activities (e.g. singing, playing with different instruments, dancing with rhythm, body percussion, solfege, basic music theory, basic technique on piano playing etc,). Children will be able to identify basic elements of music in a fun way, after 6-12 months of classes they will gain a solid foundation on music and ready to start regular piano lessons or learning other instruments.

Lessons in English

Why not learning Music in English? Music in an international language, students will be able to understand everything being taught in the classes, even if their first language is not in English. Learning Music in English will help young children begin both Music and English learning at the same time!

* The general musical terms will also be taught in both English and German.

Lessons in German

I have been teaching music since 20 years. Since I was a parent myself, I have been teaching my own children music, I see the importance of the basic musicanianship skills. Once a child understands the basic of music, has proper ear/ aural training and rhythmic sense, plus all other basic music theory, they can start to learn any instruments directly. I focus not only on the aural skill, but also sight-reading technique (yes, start early!).

I started teaching since 2003, taught over hundreds of students from beginner to advanced levels, ages from 4-year-old. Most of my students in Germany get 1st Prize (even full mark) at Jugendmusiziert. I often offer intensive trainings to prepare students for competitions and exams, including theory exams. I create my own teaching method to individual students, especially for the beginners. I select a variety of repertoires from Classical to Contemporary, Jazz, Broadway, Improvisation etc. for my students, also I arrange a lot of pieces into piano versions.

Apart from playing the beautiful melodies on the piano, we should not forget about Music Theory - Aural skills is an essiential element to make good music. Sight-singing and Sight-reading skills are equally important. How about Music history and Music analysis? Sounds too advanced. To make it simplier, I encourage my students to compose their own composition. If a student could use the elements that they learnt from the lesson (e.g. scales, intervals etc. to form with different rhythmic patterns/ different dynamics, tempos etc.), they would be able to recongnize what is "beautiful" music, and how to create "sound".

Special care for students with special needs

I was a full-time school Music Teacher for students aged between 6 and 18 with mild to moderate mental retardation or learning difficulties, I understand students who needs special care and I have individual teaching method for them.

I was also a Music Teacher (mainly using African-drums) for the groups of very young children (age of 3) up to the elderly (age of 92) as well as children with intellectual disabilities or visual impairment. Courses aim to create an atmosphere of sharing music and bringing people together by the dynamic rhythm, body movement and music-related creative activities.

I am a Music Together® certificated Teacher (~Musikgarten in Germany) and I participated in different professional courses and workshops on the subject Early Childhood Music Education, including Orff-Shulwerk/ Kodaly/ Dalcroze method.

I received my professional music training at Hong Kong Baptist University, focused on music composition and early childhood music eduation and I was awarded with the Licentiate of Trinity College London on piano recital. Furthermore, I was awarded with different prizes in various competitions and music festivals in Hong Kong. Besides piano, I had professional training on Cello, Guitar, Handbells, Gamalan, African Drummings and Chinese Flute. I was an active piano accompanist for soloist and choir and was also a Children Choir Conductor. I worked on children’s singing skills, tone production, balance, musicianship and ensemble skills.

Method and Languages

As an experienced teacher, I have studied different method books in the past years and I pick up the best for each students' personal need. Instead of following a particular method book like the traditional teaching style, I sometimes write my own materials and follow a systemetic but personalised lesson plan for each students and assess their individul needs with the combination of different exercices and methods. I can teach in English, German, French, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Not only Piano!

Many people ignore the essential of learning Music thoery. Music thoery is extremely important no matter we play Classical Muisc or improvisations. Some students may choose to avoid reading the notes or feel scare to understand the thoery behind the pieces that they are playing and simply choose to memorize the notes. After a while, they manage to play the pieces beautifully, however, they could not apply the technique that they learnt from one piece to another due to their incapabilities on notes reading. Once a student can read notes and have the ability to understand what they are playing, they can sight-read many more pieces by themselves. I do not want my students to learn ONLY how to play a piece, I guide them to learn how to understand the music that they are playing, to appreciate and interpret the music by themselves, to develop their skills and to use a proper way to play and prcatise at home. To be frank, reading notes is somehow easy if we do it in a correct way.

Some students misunderstand that playing piano is only moving their fingers. NO. We play piano with our feelings, emotion, by our ears, our body and then transfered and interpreted by our hands, fingers, wrists, albows, arms, shoudler and brain. Yes, it is more complicated than we think, however, if we have a proper trainning from the beginning, using the right way to play, it will become a habit and we can play the music naturally.

For the young students

I teach students from the age of 4-6, these ages are good to start learning an instrument (check out FAQ for further information). For those who didn't participate in the group lessons (please consider joining), I would start playing with them by using different instruments/ musical games so the young students would understand the basic musical knowledge, would then gradually apply on the piano and play music in a fun way. The support of parents are very important.

Please do not expect your children would be able to play something fancy from the first few months, we should focus on building a solid fondation and getting the right musical concept.
